I'm kind of doubtful there's a world that isn't cruel in some way. If you look at it like that, shouldn't anything here be normal somehow...? And that includes the people.

You're saying all people are the same no matter where you go, are you? There's a lot of factors to account for depending on how they have been living though.

That may be true, but I don't think their core changes at all. If you can call such a diverse group of people "humans," then there's got to be something about them that makes them the same, no matter how much they may differ on the outside.
